QUEENS SCENTED CANDLE

Self-contained Queens needs none of Manhattan’s neon lights or Brooklyn’s hip-and-cool hype. After all, it was named for the 17th century Portuguese princess Catherine of Braganza, ruler of England, Scotland, and Ireland. You don’t mess with her or her namesake landmass. Yes, the borough has a reputation for affability, but it’s also Martin Scorsese, John McEnroe, Louis Armstrong, Christopher Walken, Art Spiegelman, Howard Stern, and 50 Cent turf. And today it’s home to Indonesians, Columbians, Chinese, Russians, Indians, Ukrainians, Malaysians, Sri Lankans, Vietnamese, Serbs, Israelis, Greeks, Italians, Irish, et al. What’s more, this year marks the 50th anniversary of the New York World’s Fair, held not far from one of Queens’s two international airports, La Guardia—the other being JFK. Queens, you see, is a busy entry and exit portal.
